An HTTP cookie (also called web cookie, Internet cookie, browser cookie, or simply cookie) is a small piece of data stored on the user's computer by the web browser while browsing a website. 

-         They track users browsing activity so they can serve them with ads. This is why when you search the web for a hat, you get to see different ads for a hat when you go online later that day.

-         They help in remembering login details e.g for your Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, etc., so that when you close it and go back it remembers you.

-         Session Cookie/In-memory Cookie: This cookie is temporal and is erased when closing your browser.

-         Persistent Cookie/Tracking Cookie: This is set on creation to expire at a specific date or after a specific length of time. Persistent cookies allow marketers to track your activities on the internet and retarget you with ads.

Cookies can last for many years. Some do not expire unless you remove them manually. While some can see cookies as very helpful because they also serve practical functions that make the web easier to use, some others see it as a breach of privacy. This is why you get those little pop-ups that mostly reads “This website uses cookies…” to inform you in the cookie policy of what the cookie will be used for, you can either accept it or cancel it.
