FOCUS: HOW DO YOU EARN AS A WEB DEVELOPER?

Just because you are a developer does not mean you have to work for a company all your life, you should always have an exit plan, a plan b, c, and so on. What if you lose your job or get fired, or retired, you need a fallback plan. Your developer skill if put to good use gives you this assurance and confidence. It could also serve as an extra income stream. Some of the ways to earn include:

1. Creating micro-services. The best of all the ways to earn is to create small services. Find an industry you are passionate and knowledgeable about, research problems you can solve in that industry, use what you know, develop a product, and put it out there. You will be surprised what can come out of it in a few years, even months. What I mean is, develop a website or an app that solves small problems, lunch it online for people to use for free. You earn by strategically putting an advert on the platform, not to be annoying, and sending your users away, maybe just one or two displays.

2. Get a developer job. This is pretty obvious. Put your profile online with a good description of all the skills you have learned. I would recommend LinkedIn.

3. Freelancing. You can go lookout for small businesses around you and offer to build them a website for a fee if they have none or re-design, maintain their already existing site. In freelancing with online platforms, you don't have to take just any job you see on the platform, you have to know your level as a beginner or as a professional so as not to fail on a job. Some freelancing platforms include Freelancer, Upwork, FindWorka, SourceGig, Gigs Nigeria, Freeciti, etc.

4. Local Clients. People you meet one on one or through your card, flier, or via recommendation. You can list your service on Google My Business, go to meetup.com, etc.; this way, people can get to know you and what you do, like, trust and offer to use your service.

5. Blogging. You can create helpful informative content and put it out for free for people to benefit from it. The truth is, when you give value, people will always come back. You earn through adverts.

6. YouTube. You can create helpful videos, turn your blog content into video format, and put it on YouTube. You can also transcribe your YouTube video content to text and post on your blog. Create a channel for this so that you can earn from it after you have fulfilled the requirement of 1000 subscribers and 4000 watch hours.

7. Digital products. You can also make your video and blog contents into an eBook, you can also create courses and sell them.
